There is one the world sees, the new career, the new language, the new life. Then there is the story that often remains untold, filled with the memories of home, the sacrifices left behind, and the quiet determination it takes to begin again in a foreign land.

For Dr. Olga Mejía Glenn, that untold story has lived in her heart for decades.

Born and raised in El Chorrillo, one of Panama City’s most impoverished neighborhoods, Glenn learned early that resilience wasn’t a choice it was a necessity. Poverty, family struggles, and political unrest shaped her childhood, but they never defined her. Instead, they became the foundation of a life devoted to education, human rights, and helping others find their own voice.

Now, in her memoir, Between Two Worlds: Immigrants Building Bridges of Survival and Resilience, Glenn shares the journey she has carried with her for so many years. It is a deeply personal account of surviving hardship, witnessing history unfold during the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, and rebuilding a life in the United States while holding tightly to faith, family, and hope.

For Glenn, writing the memoir was never simply about looking back.

“There comes a point in life when you begin to think about the legacy you’ll leave behind,” she reflects. “I wanted to preserve not only my own story but also the experiences that so many immigrants carry quietly within them. If someone reads these pages and feels seen, understood, or inspired to keep moving forward, then sharing my journey has been worthwhile.”

While the events in the book are deeply personal, Glenn believes the emotions behind them are universal. Grief, fear, belonging, resilience, motherhood, faith, and the search for purpose are experiences that connect people regardless of where they were born. She hopes readers will recognize pieces of themselves in her story, whether they have crossed international borders or simply endured difficult seasons in their own lives.

Her journey eventually led her to New York, where education became both a passion and a calling. After earning bachelor’s degrees in journalism and English in Panama, she continued her studies in the United States, earning a master’s degree in International Studies from the CUNY Graduate Center and a Ph.D. from Fordham University. Throughout her career, she has dedicated herself to advocating for human rights and improving educational opportunities for English Language Learners, believing that every person deserves the opportunity to succeed regardless of where their journey begins.

Today, Glenn continues that mission through advocacy, education, and the nonprofit organization she founded to support Indigenous communities through economic empowerment and environmental stewardship. Yet she believes one of the most powerful ways people can create change is by telling their stories honestly.

At its heart, Between Two Worlds is not simply an immigrant memoir. It is a story about surviving life’s hardest moments without allowing them to define the future. It is a reminder that healing often begins with vulnerability, that courage is built one step at a time, and that hope has the power to carry us across even the most difficult bridges.

About the Author

Olga Mejía Glenn, Ph.D., is an educator, human rights advocate, and author whose life has been dedicated to advancing dignity, justice, and educational opportunity. Born and raised in Panama, she served as President of the Human Rights Commission of Panama and later addressed international audiences, including the U.S. Congress and the European Parliament, about the humanitarian impact of the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama. After immigrating to the United States, she earned a master’s degree in International Studies from the CUNY Graduate Center and a Ph.D. from Fordham University. Throughout her career, she has led educational initiatives that have impacted thousands of English Language Learners and continues her advocacy through Mother Earth, the nonprofit organization she founded to support Indigenous communities. A lifelong learner and advocate, after retirement, she recently became a Certified Human Rights Consultant for the US Institute of Diplomacy and Human Rights; was nominated for the HOPE BINATIONAL Fellowship; and founded Mother Earth-Ibo Döbö, a non-profit organization to support indigenous communities through economic empowerment, environmental stewardship, and international advocacy. She is studying international indigenous law with the UN via webinars and received accreditation in the field of Escazu Agreements, among others, and is taking a post graduate course in Climate Justice. Between Two Worlds is her deeply personal memoir of resilience, healing, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
