Images from Vietnam 1969: A Journey with the 11th Armored Cavalry by James M. Stanish is a hauntingly beautiful ode to bravery, chaos, and humanity in war. It takes readers into the heart of the Vietnam War as it really was. With vivid photos and an interesting personal story, this book is more than just a biography. It’s a time capsule of one of America’s most troubled times, seen through the eyes of a young officer who lived it day by day.

When 1LT James M. Stanish got to Vietnam on Valentine’s Day 1969, he was put in charge of an armored cavalry platoon. He had to take forty men and nine armored vehicles through the dangerous jungles of III Corps. His career went from being a combat leader to working in civil affairs. This gave him a unique, well-rounded view of war, one that shows both the brutality of battle and the kindness shown to local communities through MEDCAP trips, school visits, and cultural exchanges.

There is a huge variety of scenes in James M. Stanish’s book Images from Vietnam 1969. There are the rumbling of Sheridan tanks in battle, the landing of CH-47 Chinooks in enemy territory, Montagnard tribespeople practicing old customs, and schoolchildren waiting in line to be helped by Army medics. There are first-person stories next to each picture that give readers background, feeling, and the human story behind the moment.

These snapshots, taken decades ago, make up a mosaic of memory, strife, and service. In a time when stories are filtered and memories are lost, James M. Stanish gives us something real, honest, and lasting.

A must-read for soldiers, historians, military families, and anyone else who wants to know what it was really like to live in Vietnam, not as a story or movie.

You can now buy Images from Vietnam 1969: A Journey with the 11th Armored Cavalry in hardcover and digital versions anywhere that sells books.

About the Author:

The world James M. Stanish was born into was already changed by war. He was born on August 5, 1945, the day before Hiroshima was bombed. The college where he got his psychology degree also gave him the opportunity to join the U.S. Army as a second lieutenant through ROTC.

Following the completion of the Armored Officers Basic Course at Fort Knox, he was sent to Vietnam with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in early 1969. He was in charge of a combat platoon in Vietnam and then worked as a Civil Affairs Officer, connecting military activities with outreach to civilians.

Because he had special access, he was able to write about frontline events and humanitarian work in a way that few books can match. James M. Stanish joined Chrysler’s defense business when he got back home and worked on projects like the M60A3 and M1 Abrams tanks and the Stryker vehicle.
