Recently, Yunshé Village, nestled at the foot of Mount Fanjing, has seen a steady stream of visitors.

The Longtan River runs crystal clear, reflecting the blue sky and the village’s traditional houses. Tourists can be seen taking photos along the riverbank, relaxing with tea at local teahouses, while children splash and play barefoot in the shallow waters.

At the “Yunxi Li” guesthouse, staff are busy handling bookings and attending to guests. Reflecting on the bustling scenes during the recent May Day and Dragon Boat Festival holidays, locals say: “With such breathtaking landscapes and pristine nature, it’s no surprise that more and more people are choosing Guizhou as a travel destination.”

What draws visitors to Guizhou?

For many, it’s the chance to experience mountains, waters, and ecology—a defining appeal of the region.

From the majestic grandeur of Huangguoshu Waterfall to the rugged splendor of Mount Fanjing in Tongren, and the lush, picturesque karst landscapes of Libo, Guizhou offers an ecological paradise. This vibrant summer, its exceptional natural environment and rich regional culture are drawing tourists in droves. Ecotourism destinations such as “Huang Xiaoxi Eats Dinner” have become particularly popular, bustling with activity.

Guizhou is integrating ecology with industry—preserving the serenity of its landscapes while unlocking their economic potential. In 2024, the province recorded year-on-year increases of 10.4% in total tourist visits, 13.3% in tourism revenue, and a remarkable 81.8% in overnight stays by inbound travelers. Among these achievements, ecotourism has undoubtedly emerged as a key growth driver.

Widely known as the “Mountain Park Province,” Guizhou has long been a dream destination for travelers from across the globe.

As ecotourism becomes a critical path for the sustainable use of cultural and tourism resources—and a means to promote harmony between humanity and nature—the challenge now lies in achieving a balance between economic and ecological benefits.

In recent years, Guizhou has continued to enhance the protection, development, and promotion of its ecological and cultural tourism resources. The province has begun to establish a diverse ecotourism system, centered around various types of protected areas, including nature reserves, forest parks, scenic areas, wetlands, geoparks, and water conservancy scenic zones.

With a clearer understanding of its natural endowments, Guizhou is more confident than ever in advancing its ecotourism strategy. Of the 15 major categories of natural tourism resources identified globally, Guizhou is home to 10. The province contains nearly every type of karst landform—except glacial karst—and is China’s largest karst region.

Guizhou ranks first in China in the number of UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites. It boasts 10 national 5A-rated tourist attractions. Internationally renowned ecological destinations such as Mount Fanjing and the Libo Karst have become globally recognized symbols of Guizhou’s ecological richness. These unparalleled natural assets and high-profile accolades form the core appeal of Guizhou’s ecotourism brand.

When “green development” intersects with tourism, it’s essential not only to thoroughly assess ecological resources but also to protect and enhance them for sustainable growth.

Guizhou has taken concrete steps in recent years to address key environmental challenges, such as restoring areas of soil erosion in the Chishui River Basin and mitigating disturbances to wildlife habitats. In Tongren’s Wanshan area, the province is also transforming former mercury mining sites from “resource-based” to “scenery-based” tourism destinations—turning environmental legacy sites into ecological assets.

Today, Guizhou boasts a forest coverage rate of 63.3%. Across its 9 major cities and 88 counties, the proportion of days with good air quality averages 99.1%. Surface water quality remains excellent, with 100% of water monitoring sites at provincial borders meeting or exceeding standards. These “green indicators” continue to attract tourists from across the country and beyond.

From the remote reaches of the Wumeng Mountains to the banks of the Chishui River, from the foothills of Mount Fanjing to both sides of the Wujiang River, every part of Guizhou has developed its own unique ecotourism strategies. Together, they form a vibrant and diverse picture of the province’s eco-development vision.

At the renowned Huangguoshu Waterfall — celebrated as “China’s No. 1 Waterfall” — cascading water crashes down the cliffs in a dramatic display, the sound audible from afar. On the viewing platform, visitors lift their phones to capture the moment, faces lit with excitement and wonder.

Chen Ting, a tourist from Guangdong, remarked with delight, “Even the air here feels sweet—it’s incredibly relaxing.”

Along the banks of the Wuyang River in Ganxi Township, Shibing County, Qiandongnan Prefecture, the local “flower economy” is steadily gaining recognition. With the philosophy of “living off the land,” the township has developed over ten rural tourism experiences, including leisure fishing, wedding photography, and outdoor camping. It has introduced five flower-viewing routes—by car, on foot, by bike, by boat, and through garden tours—while building floral brands around lotus, peach, plum, and rapeseed blossoms. These offerings are further enriched through complementary tourism formats such as farmhouse restaurants and boutique homestays. Since the beginning of 2024, Ganxi Township has received over 200,000 visitors, generating a total tourism revenue of more than RMB 10 million.

Guizhou’s efforts to convert ecological assets into economic value are increasingly vivid and effective. By integrating the “Green+” concept into all aspects of cultural and tourism development, the province has built a diverse and localized ecosystem of ecotourism products:

Guiyang, the provincial capital, has developed a tourism product system centered on urban charm, summer retreats, wellness, and leisure vacations;

Anshun features a tourism model built around iconic sites such as the Huangguoshu Waterfall and Tianlong Tunpu, highlighting natural scenery and ethnic heritage;

Zunyi has established a tourism portfolio that combines revolutionary history—such as the Zunyi Conference Site—with natural wonders like the Chishui World Natural Heritage area;

As the saying goes, “If people protect green mountains, green mountains will reward them in return.” In Guizhou, ecological conservation and economic development go hand in hand. Among the province’s magnificent landscapes, the concept of “natural assets for shared prosperity” is flourishing with new vitality.
