cskNew Delhi, Monday, October 6 – Nothing could have been a better start for Chennai Super Kings on the grand finale of Champions League T20 2014 which took place on Saturday, October 4, than winning the toss at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni invited Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first in order to have the ‘target’ exactly clear in mind.

His decision though seemed wrong in view of the fact that openers Robin Uthappa and KKR captain Gautam Gambhir played solid innings to kick off the final match in the best possible ways. Wicketkeeper-batsman Uthappa scored 39 runs of 32 balls (4 x 4 and 6 x 1) prior succumbing to Pawan Negi when 11th over was about to end. His dismissal made Jacques Kallis to arrive on the crease but lost his wicket to the same man post scoring 1 run of 4 balls.

The blinder of 32-year-old Gambhir, who hardly accumulated a few runs for his team in the previously held matches being out of the form, imparted huge role in making ‘men in purple’ to be at a robust  stage right from the beginning. 7 fours and 3 sixes by him at different corners of the ground added to his splendid innings of 80 runs what he attained in just 52 balls. A superb spell by Ravindra Jadeja restricted him from hitting the ton. Negi was on fire with his superb bowling, sending Manish Pandey, Ryan ten Doeschate and Suryakumar Yadav back to the pavilion. Pandey tried his best to take the pressure off by striking 32 runs of 19 balls, including a couple of sixes and fours. Doeschate and Yadav were dismissed at 0 run apiece. Yusuf Pathan (20 runs of 9 balls; 4 x 2 and 6 x 1) and Andre Russell (2 runs of 2 balls remained unbeaten till the end and led KKR put 180 runs on the scoreboard.

The target was not as easy to chase as it was achieved by CSK. Despite the fact that Dwayne Smith dismissal at 8 runs (4 x 2) gave an early breakthrough to Kolkata Knight Riders, Dhoni’s squad was miles ahead of the opponents in all regards the moment Suresh Raina came at 22 yards pitch. Though Brendon McCullum couldn’t go far with him and fell short to Yusuf Pathan after contributing 39 runs in his teams total but job of pocketing the victory was in progress. Left-handed cricketer Raina stood out amid others with 109-run knock that shattered KKR hope to emerge as the champs in last show of the 21-day long tournament. 6 boundaries and 8 sixes were adequate to explain about his strengths. His blitz, together with skipper’s 23 runs, which comprised a four and couple of sixes, played pivotal part in letting CSK finished the contest in a style as they scored 185 runs with 9 balls remaining. The squad registered an eight-wicket victory over Kolkata and made Chennai Super Kings lift the Champions League trophy once again.
